What Does an NSF Supplier Assurance Audit Mean?

Looking Beyond a Test or Certification

When it comes to avocado oil, consumers are seeing more claims, certifications and laboratory test results than ever before. But these different forms of verification don't all tell you the same thing.

At Bella Vado, we believe it's important to understand the difference.

Seed-Oil-Free

Primarily a consumer positioning and certification claim.

Seed-oil-free certification tells you that a product meets a standard for avoiding seed oils. It does not necessarily tell you much about the quality, processing or authenticity of the avocado oil itself.

In fact, a refined avocado oil can legitimately be seed-oil-free. It can contain no seed oils while still being a highly processed oil.

Seed-oil-free does not automatically mean Extra Virgin, unrefined, cold-pressed or minimally processed.

Single-Batch Laboratory Testing

A snapshot of a particular sample.

Laboratory testing is an important part of quality control. Tests can provide valuable information about characteristics such as free fatty acids, peroxide value, microbiological quality and other properties of the oil.

But a laboratory result represents the sample that was tested. It does not, by itself, evaluate the facility where the oil was produced, the manufacturing practices used, the traceability system, or the controls in place from one batch to the next.

NSF Supplier Assurance Audit

An independent examination of the process behind the product.

An NSF Supplier Assurance Audit for Food Manufacturing evaluates the manufacturer's operation, including food-safety practices, quality systems, labeling, documentation, traceability and manufacturing controls.

That's a fundamentally different type of assurance.

A laboratory test examines the oil.
An audit examines the process that produces the oil.

The value of an independent audit is that an outside organization evaluates the systems and practices behind the product rather than simply accepting the manufacturer's own claims.

Why This Matters for Bella Vado

Bella Vado believes quality and authenticity should be supported by more than a single test result or a certification designed for a different purpose.

Our oil is routinely tested for quality indicators including free fatty acids, peroxide value, and yeast and mold. At the same time, our manufacturing operation has undergone an NSF Supplier Assurance Audit for Food Manufacturing, providing independent assurance of the integrity of our manufacturing process.

We believe these approaches complement each other:

Testing tells us about the oil.
Traceability connects the oil to its production.
An independent audit examines the systems behind that production.

For consumers looking for genuine Extra Virgin avocado oil, that distinction matters.

A seal on a bottle can tell you something about the product.

An independently audited manufacturing process tells you something about how that product came to be in the bottle.
